George Michael wears Mykita The first MYKITA MYLON collection marks the foundation of a new product segment in the eyewear sector: luxury sports fashion. These are glasses that redefine the borders between the worlds of fashion and sports. All MYLON models boast individual adaptability, low weight and outstanding durability. The key is a patented polyamide-based material that can be individually adjusted to the wearer. The evolution of the MYLON frames began with a new production process that promised to revolutionise the history of design when launched in the late 1990s; Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) enables the creation of three-dimensional objects as desired. Today SLS is primarily used to make prototypes, with only few sintered products having become everyday commercial items. In 2007 MYKITA began experimenting with the polyamide material, aiming to pioneer it in the production of spectacles. After years of research MYKITA developed a complex process that creates a sophisticated finish in several steps and gives the frames a unique visual and tactile appeal. MYKITA named the new material MYLON and has since won recognition for the development process in the shape of the 2011 IF material award.

The name MYKITA is derived from “Kita” (a common abbreviation for Kindertagesstätte) and is a reference to the firm’s first premises in a former day nursery. MYKITA made its debut on the eyewear market with COLLECTION No1. This metal frame collection boasts not only innovative and functional design, but also MYKITA’s patented hinge that removes the need for awkward screws and soldering. The individual frame elements are cut out of thin stainless sheet steel before being manually shaped in a series of separate steps. COLLECTION No2 is a collection made from voluminous acetate with a newly developed and patented hinge concept based on the innovative Metal Injection Moulding process.

“Our eyes were made to enable us to see forms in light … The primary forms are beautiful forms, because they can be clearly appreciated.” Le Corbusier: Vers une architecture, Paris 1923.

The preference of Swiss architect Le Corbusier for thickset horn-rimmed glasses inspired Mykita and Brazilian fashion designer Alexandre Herchcovitch to create two new sunglasses models for spring/summer 2012 – a homage to the round form.
The 2009 autumn/winter collection, inspired by the 1976 Winter Olympics, featuring the sunglasses models FRANZ, SEPP and LUKE marked the birth of a long-term collaboration between Bernhard Willhelm and MYKITA. The mirrored-lens aviator frame series has since seen the addition of a number of forms and colours.
