Queen of clean, patroness of pure, Jil Sander started something important in the nineties—a pared-back, working-woman translation of conceptualism. Now, with a new generation working in the same vein—everyone from Céline to Alexander Wang to Victoria Beckham—she finds herself in the unfamiliar position of designing an almost mainstream look. Where less practiced designers might cast around experimentally at this level, though, Jil Sander has her cuts down pat. It made for a solidly commercial collection which doubtless will have her choir of faithful customers singing her praises.
